Hello Ay Ay! Music.it is really pleased to host you among its pages. Let’s start asking you how and when you decided to let the music ruling your life. Is there any specific anecdote you never told anyone?
What’s up! Sure, my dad used to be a reggae / dancehall DJ. So my first contact with music as a little child was reggae which was played on vinyls all day long. My dad showed me tons of music. I remember sitting in the car with him and he would listen to Wu Tang Clan. He showed me how much variety music has. When I was 14 I wanted to be a rapper. But I got really bored ripping beats off YouTube, so i started creating my own. My grandpa is a music teacher and he tried to teach me to play the piano and guitar. Unfortunately that never really worked out… While growing up I didn’t like school and stuff, I just focused on music and doing creative stuff.
You’re German. And Germany is a very productive state for what arts and music concern. What is the weight of your roots for the music you produce?
Germany has a really healthy techno scene and a domestic pop scene which seems to be doing very well but is way too repetitive for me. I’ve always been much more into music from other parts of the world. This is the reason why i focused on writing English songs.
What about the artists you like most? Who are they and how deep is the influence on your writing?
One of my favorite artists and producers is Skrillex. I remember when he dropped his debut EP “My name is skrillex”: I was blown away from this new sound and how he manipulated his vocal samples. This was the moment where I started to think outside the box and began to work on my own style and discovering new ways of doing things in my DAW. Also Lil Wayne was a huge inspiration in my younger years. He was my idol as rapper before I focused on doing beats. I watched his documentary, he wrote music every day, recording tons of song. This pushed me to work harder and keep evolving. I really love the drama he puts in his music.
I would like to hear the story of your debut single “What You Need”. Would you tell us about its creation?
I had a really bad time back then, I was struggling with my anxiety and i wanted to write a song which gives you the energy to do everything you want, which pushed you to believe in yourself cause that’s everything you need, you know. That’s where the energetic part of the song comes from, where I think the dark and somehow chilled part of the song comes from my anxiety and depersonalization.
What about the collaboration with QNTN? How did it start and how does it proceed?
QNTN and I first met in London last year. We were really vibing together, we definitely were perfect counterparts in songwriting. For a couple of days we were sitting together in a small studio where we wrote a bunch of songs. Actually the first one was “what you need”. Don’t wanna say too much about what’s coming, but I’m working very hard right now to get some new songs finished. I’m very excited to share more soon.
What about the videoclip you premiered on July the 22nd. It is very accurate and very well-done. Who’s behind the main idea?
Thank you! For the music video we teamed up with Folkert Verdoorn. He translated my ideas perfectly to the screen. I think sport represents the song so well. You have to believe in what you have and who you are, that’s what you need, fight to own yourself.
Would you like that people would catch some sort of message from your music? If yes, which message would that be?
I want people to feel energised from my music. Getting the energy for whatever situation they are in right now. Be yourself, do what you want. Don’t listen to anybody telling you, that you can’t do this and that. You shouldn’t put yourself in a box and try to be like other people. Be you and be happy. I guess that’s what I wish people feel when listening to my music.
Do you believe in Faith?
If you mean faith in any god, not really. I believe in myself and people I love. Stuff that makes me feel good. But fun fact: sometimes i pray to the Universe. I don’t really know why i do that though.
I would like you to write 5 albums that shaped your musical awareness.
Nirvana – “In Utero”, the first album i ever bought myself. Kanye West – “808s & Heartbreaks”, I think this is my favorite album of all time. Even just the album title is genius. The Prodigy – I have every single album and can’t really tell which one i like the most. Lil Wayne – “Tha Carter III”, XXXTENTACION – “?”

Ciao Ay Ay! È un piacere averti tra le pagine di Music.it! Rompiamo subito il ghiaccio. Quando e come hai deciso che fosse la musica a guidare la tua vita? Esiste un particolare aneddoto a riguardo che non hai mai raccontato a nessuno?
Ciao a tutti! Sicuro: mio padre faceva il dj in una reggae dancehall. Quindi da piccolo, il mio primo contatto con la musica è stato con il reggae che suonava sempre sui vinili tutti i giorni. Mio padre mi ha fatto conoscere una valanga di musica. Ricordo che seduti in macchina insieme, lui ascoltava i Wu Tang Clan. Mi ha mostrato quanta varietà esista nella musica. A quattordici anni volevo fare il rapper. Poi, però, mi annoiavo a fregare i beat su YouTube, così ho cominciato a farne di miei. Mio nonno insegna musica e lui ci ha provato ad insegnarmi pianoforte e chitarra. Sfortunatamente, non ha mai funzionato per davvero… Crescendo, la scuola non mi piaceva e mi sono focalizzato solo nel fare musica e cose creative.
Tu sei tedesco. E la Germania è piuttosto attiva rispetto alla produzione d’arte e musica. Che peso hanno le tue radici nella tua di produzione?
In Germania la scena tecno è piuttosto buona e pure il pop va molto. Solo che mi annoia. Io ho sempre preferito musica che venisse da altre parti del mondo. Ecco perché mi sono concentrato a scrivere in inglese.
Che mi dici sui tuoi artisti preferiti? Chi sono e in che modo hanno influenzato la tua scrittura?
Uno dei miei artiisti e produttori preferiti è Skrillex. Ricordo quando uscì il suo Ep di debutto, “My name in Skrillex”: quel sound nuovo e quel suo modo di manipolare la voce mi stregarono. È stato quello il momento in cui ho cominciato a pensare fuori dagli schemi e scoperto come lavorare sulla mia DAW. In passato anche Lil Wayne è stato di grande ispirazione. Era il mio idolo rapper prima che iniziassi a concentrarmi sulla produzione di beat. Ho visto un documentario su di lui, scriveva tutti i giorni e registrava un sacco di roba. Questa cosa mi ha spinto a lavorare duro e seguitare ad evolvermi. Mi piace molto la drammaticità dei suoi pezzi.
Vorrei conoscere la storia che esiste dietro “What you need”, il tuo singolo di debutto. Ce la racconti?
Me la passavo male all’epoca, ero depresso e volevo scrivere una canzone che facesse arrivare l’energia che serve per fare le cose che si vogliono fare, che spingesse a credere in se stessi perché è quella l’unica cosa di cui hai bisogno, no? Da qui viene lo stimolo della canzone, quando trasformo il pensiero nero e in un qualche modo mi rilasso. Parte del brano viene proprio dall’ansia e la depersonalizzazione.
E la collaborazione con QNTN? Quand’è iniziata e come procede?
QNTN ed io ci siamo incontrarti per la prima volta l’anno scorso a Londra. Ci siamo trovati davvero bene, anche nel comporre eravamo assolutamente in armonia. Con un paio di giorni ci siamo chiusi in un piccolo studio e abbiamo scritto una manciata di canzoni. In verità, la prima era proprio “What You Need”. Non mi va di dire molto rispetto al futuro, però in questo momento sto lavorando molto per concludere alcuni pezzi. Presto usciranno e ne sono felice!
Cosa mi dici invece del video clip uscito il 22 Luglio su YouTube? Lo trovo molto accurato e ben fatto. Chi c’è dietro l’idea di base?
Ti ringrazio! Per la creazione del video abbiamo fatto squadra con Folker Verdoon. Ha tradotto perfettamente le mie idee sullo schermo. Io credo che lo sport rappresenti la canzone proprio bene. Devi credere in quello che hai e quello che sei. Di questo hai bisogno, lottare per il proprio essere.
Vorresti che il pubblico possa carpire qualche messaggio ascoltando tua musica? Se sì, quale sarebbe questo messaggio?
Voglio che le persone si sentano energizzate dalla mia musica. Che prendano l’energia necessaria per affrontare qualunque situazione in cui si trovino adesso. Sii te stesso, fai quello che vuoi. Non ascoltare nessuno che ti dica che non puoi o non sai fare qualcosa. Cerca di non chiuderti e omologarti per essere come le altre persone. Sii tu e sii felice. Credo sia questo il messaggio che mi auguro arrivi alle persone che ascoltano la mia musica.
Tu ci credi nella fede?
Se intendi fede in un qualche dio, direi di no. Credo in me stesso e nelle persone che amo. Nelle cose che mi fanno stare bene. Ma è buffo che ogni tanto prego l’Universo. Ma non ho ben chiaro il perché lo faccio.
Vorrei mi dicessi i cinque album che hanno formato la tua coscienza musicale.
Nirvana – “In Utero” : Il primo album che abbia mai comprato. Kanye West – “808s & Heartbreaks”, credo questo sia il mio album preferito in assoluto. Anche il solo titolo è geniale.
